Missourians are getting smoother, safer roads sooner thanks to additional funding from the passage of Amendment 3. That’s the message MoDOT Director Pete Rahn sent to lawmakers in the agency’s annual report delivered recently. State law requires MoDOT to submit the report to the governor, lieutenant governor and legislators before Nov. 10 of each year. MoDOT Helps Restore Traffic in Wilma Aftermath
Seven MoDOT Traffic employees made history Nov. 16 when they arrived in Florida to help restore approximately 2,800 traffic signals out of service due to Hurricane Wilma. This is the first out-of-state disaster support that MoDOT has done. Volunteers are due to return Nov. 23. Hurricane Wilma

Bridge Inspection Season Begins
MoDOT bridge maintenance crews are stepping into high gear to begin their annual bridge inspections. Seven bridge inspectors tackle the task of examining roughly half of MoDOT’s more than 10,000 bridges each year. Outdoor Advertising Arrives on the Web
You may not think of MoDOT when you see billboards or junkyards close to the roadways, but the department does play a regulatory role with these issues. MoDOT works with businesses and communities to ensure Missouri stays in compliance with federal and state rules and regulations. One convenient way the outdoor advertising division is communicating with the public is through its new Web site. New Boards May Help Save Lives
MoDOT recently received a $400,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to implement the department’s portion of a statewide Amber Alert plan. With the FHWA funds and $100,000 in state money, several changeable message boards will be added on Interstates 70 and 44 to increase emergency communication, and to help with the overall management of the traffic system and motorist communications. Travel Safely and Arrive Alive This Thanksgiving
Even though the Thanksgiving weekend traditionally kicks off the holiday season, it's also one of the most dangerous holidays on Missouri’s roadways. In the past five years, 77 people have been killed and 3,314 have been injured in traffic crashes on Missouri roadways over Thanksgiving holidays. MoDOT Names New CFO
As MoDOT ’s chief financial and administrative officer, Roberta Broeker is now the highest-ranking female in the agency’s 84-year history. Broeker, who previously served as the department’s director of audits and investigations, replaced Pat Goff, who retired. Broeker oversees MoDOT’s financial and administrative operations, including the agency’s $2.2 billion budget. New CFO

MoDOT Receives High Marks In Audit
A representative from an independent auditing firm hired to review MoDOT's financial practices told MoDOT commissioners recently that the department has once again received its highest possible rating. This is the sixth straight year MoDOT has received this high rating from outside auditors. "MoDOT has a financial statement they can be very proud of," said Deborah A. McCoy, a partner with BKD, LLP. "The rating MoDOT received means the agency's operations are in accordance with the applicable government accounting principles."
Tracking Adopt-A-Highway's Progress
In the 18 years since the first Adopt-A-Highway group picked up trash in Missouri, many groups have volunteered their time -- with the ultimate goal of making Missouri’s roadsides attractive for residents and visitors. MoDOT has continually strived to improve the program as well. Currently, the department is tracking the numbers of miles adopted. MoDOT Employee Awarded for Excellent Roadside Management
MoDOT Roadside Management Specialist Rand Swanigan received a national Roadside Excellence Award in October for excellence in developing a successful vegetation management program for Missouri roadsides. The National Roadside Vegetation Management Association presented the award, which is given annually to the city, county, state agency and university with the top roadside vegetation management program.
