New High-Tech Trucks Expected to Reduce Fuel, Maintenance Costs

MoDOT is the first government agency in the nation to test a new energy saving, environmentally friendly, diesel-electric bucket truck. MoDOT expects the Utility Hybrid Truck Pilot Program to demonstrate the vehicle's ability to cut fuel costs and smog-producing emissions in half, while also reducing maintenance costs, reducing noise and providing an alternative power source in emergencies. Missouri’s Five-Year Transportation Construction Program Approved

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently approved a new five-year transportation construction program including more than 900 highway and bridge projects. The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, or STIP, identifies all transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies for fiscal years 2007 through 2011 (July 1, 2006– June 30, 2011). Teens Concentrate on Traffic Safety Issues

High school students from around the state will be in Jefferson City July 27 through July 29 for a Team Spirit Leadership Training Conference, a statewide program sponsored by MoDOT’s Highway Safety Division. The program challenges students to explore knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to driving habits among their peers. During the conference, Team Spirit youth will create an action plan they can implement in their school and their community that will address traffic safety issues. Team

Keeping the Lines Visible

MoDOT recently purchased its first Laserlux retroreflectometer, an instrument that measures pavement markings’ retroreflectivity to ensure the markings are visible to nighttime drivers. The equipment, which is mounted to the outside of the vehicle, scans the markings with a laser beam and measures how much light is returned. It should allow MoDOT to measure more markings, while reducing costs. MoDOT Signs On to New Program

With more than 600,000 signs statewide, MoDOT has its hands full making sure the signs are well maintained and visible to the traveling public. However, a new program put into practice by MoDOT’s Sign Production Center known as SignTrack will help workers track a sign’s life cycle and keep up-to-date records. SignTrack

Computer Program Manages Work Zones

MoDOT traffic engineers have developed the first computer program for determining appropriate work-zone management strategies. The Transportation Management Plan will make it quicker and easier for MoDOT workers to determine the appropriate options for each work zone project. New Program

Motor Carrier Registration Law

On June 14, a bill was signed into law that would allow the implementation of part of the Performance and Registration Information System Management (PRISM) tracks unsafe commercial vehicles and their drivers who have been placed out of service by the U.S. Department of Transportation. New Law
