Litterbugs Risk Hunting, Fishing License Suspension
If you plan on going hunting or fishing this season, make sure that you properly dispose of your trash. In addition to the costly effects on the environment, littering can lead to loss of hunting and fishing privileges, according to a recent policy established by the Missouri Conservation Commission.
“The policy was set up to get the message across to people that extreme littering is harmful to the environment,” said Larry Yamnitz, unit chief of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Protection division.
The policy divides littering violations into two categories: minor and extreme violations. An example of a minor offense is throwing a soda can out the window and can result in a ticket. Extreme littering is a larger offense like improperly dumping household trash or tires, and can result in a ticket as well as possible loss of hunting and fishing privileges.
“Hunting is a privilege granted by the Conservation Commission and can be revoked for due cause, such as littering,” Yamnitz said. “In the event of an extreme violation, the Commission will review the case and then decide if hunting or fishing revocation is the right action.”
Stepping across the border to hunt might not be an option either. Missouri is part of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, stating suspension in Missouri means loss of privileges in 21 other states, including Kansas and Iowa.
