Five-Year Transportation Program
Available for Review
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri’s proposed five-year transportation improvement program is now available for public review. The Missouri Department of Transportation’s construction program lists all transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies for fiscal years 2007 through 2011 (July 1, 2006 – June 30, 2011).
The draft 2007-2011 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program continues work on improving the existing system of roads and bridges. It includes more than 820 highway and bridge projects totaling approximately $5.4 billion over the next five years. If MoDOT and statewide planning partners identify additional highway and bridge projects, they will be presented publicly prior to final STIP approval.
The draft STIP also provides approximately $0.7 billion for other modes of transportation and approximately $0.7 billion for city and county transportation programs, totaling $6.8 billion available over the five-year period.
The department’s customer service centers at 1-888 ASK MODOT (275-6636) are available to help citizens interested in seeing the program or offering comments. Beginning May 10, the program will also be available on MoDOT’s Web site – www.modot.org – and at MoDOT’s district offices around the state. The formal public comment period ends June 27.
“We are very interested in the public’s input,” MoDOT Director Pete Rahn said. “The transportation improvement program is an essential part of MoDOT’s communication with customers to let them know their investment is being spent on the most important transportation projects.
“This transportation improvement program focuses on two goals. One is to deliver the commitments that have been made, and the second is to improve the conditions of the pavements and bridges on our major roads.
“There’s not money available for adding major construction projects in 2011,” Rahn added, “because the Amendment 3 resources run out, and our state transportation program goes back to normal spending levels. This concerns us along with rising construction costs and declining revenues.”
Following the public review, the comments will be presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. The commission will review the comments and the final transportation program before considering it for approval July 11.
The draft 2007–2011 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program includes transportation improvements identified by metropolitan planning organizations in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia, Jefferson City, Joplin and St. Joseph. The STIP projects located in these areas are subject to discussion and approval by the appropriate metropolitan planning organization.
