Cultural Resources Analysts Inc., archaeologists for the Avenue of the Saints project, presented a poster at the 2007 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting titled AOS New Frontiers in Missouri. The poster was a summary of the Avenue of the Saints project and was set up in the Energy and Environment section of the meetings. Please take a look at the AOS New Frontiers in MO Past handout from the presentation.

Archeological excavations in Lewis County and Clark County are complete. Not every project in Missouri requires an archeological excavation; this is one of the largest excavations performed by MoDOT.

There were several sites
of interest along Route 61 in Lewis
and Clark Counties. The main site being excavated was north of Canton. MoDOT offered scheduled tours to groups interested in exploring first-hand
the uniqueness of the area. Speakers were also available to speak to groups in the surrounding area.
Sufficient data has been collected giving us a better understanding of the nature of the archaeological
deposits in the Avenue of
the Saints corridor. The investigations determined
if additional buried sites were located in the corridor,
provide information needed to determine site boundaries,
evaluate site integrity and function, determine the number
of site components, and determine the age and character
of site components.
The
artifacts recovered at any archeological site become property
of the state of Missouri. MoDOT pays to have them stored
at a curation center where they can be studied by other
archaeologists. Occasionally collections are loaned out
to museums for displays. MoDOT worked with Culver
Stockton College in Canton
to display some of the artifacts found in Lewis County.
In the
winter of 2004, archeologists begin investigations
in Lewis County and made some interesting discoveries
such as this earth oven.
