Preventative maintenance and a smoother driving surface will be the major benefits of the chip seal operation.   The project consists of placing a thin overlay on the roadway to seal and protect the pavement and extend the pavement life.

Crews will be working daylight work hours; traffic will be reduced to one lane during construction with flaggers and pilot cars controlling traffic through the work zone.   The roadway will be opened to two lanes at the end of each workday.   Please allow ample driving time to your destination.   Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route.   The project should be complete in 8 to 10 working days, weather permitting.

Crews maybe working some nighttime hours to remove the existing stripe in preparation for striping operations that are performed during daytime hours.   Traffic will be reduced to one lane with a 2-mile work zone where crews are removing the stripes.

Motorists should be aware that striping operations are slow moving work zones.   The trucks drive around 10 miles per hour during a painting operation and there are usually three to four trucks involved in the
painting process.   On the back of the trucks there are large signs that read wet paint.

The striping should be complete in 10 to 14 working days, weather permitting.

May 5, 2005 – MoDOT and Wal-mart partner to improve Business Route 54 in Mexico
Recently, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and Wal-Mart agreed on a partnership to improve the roadway in front of the new Wal-Mart on Business Route 54 in Mexico. Wal-Mart and MoDOT have approved to share the cost of resurfacing the roadway from the Route 54 interchange north approximately ¾ of a mile.  Some of the costs associated with Wal-mart’s portion of the project will be reimbursed through a sales tax rebate agreement with the City of Mexico.
Several months ago, Wal-Mart applied for a permit to improve the entrance into the new Wal-Mart by adding new concrete turn lanes. Wal-Mart and MoDOT decided to take advantage of this opportunity to make improvements to the roadway. “The contractor was already in the area, so we knew we could get the project done quicker and less expensively,” said MoDOT District Engineer Kirk Juranas. MoDOT provided trucks to haul material and traffic control through the work zone, while Wal-mart purchased materials and supplied the asphalt crew and machinery. About 600 tons of asphalt were laid on the road. The cost of the entire project is estimated to be half what it would have been if a separate project would have been initiated.
MoDOT maintenance crews milled off the roadway last week to prepare for the new surface. On Tuesday, both Wal-mart contractor and MoDOT crews worked together to resurface both lanes and improve the shoulder across from the Wal-mart entrances. Final striping, signing and clean up will occur over the next week.

May 11, 2005 -- This week, MoDOT and Ameren UE will remove the overhead flashers at the intersection of Routes 47 and 94.

Also, new poles will be placed to prepare for the permanent traffic signals that will be installed over the next month.
While crews are working in the area, traffic will be reduced to one-lane at times and short-term road closures will be required. This work should take one to two days, then crews will install signals. These will remain on flash mode for at least two weeks. At that time, the signal controller and the loop detectors will be installed.
