MoDOT has committed to upgrade to four lanes by the end of 2009. The project is divided into 3 sections:
Hannibal to Monroe City
- Project 94% complete; Contractor active on paving eastbound lanes and median openings, seed and mulch, shaping slopes and ditches; crews will be striping weather permitting.
- September 2008 completion
- New westbound lanes to the north side-Opened to traffic August 7.
Progressive Contractors, Inc., St. Michael, MN
- Award Cost $17,454,758.14
- The east exit to Monroe City is permanently closed.

Monroe City to Shelbina

Project Overal 30% complete -
Weather permitting, all operations are active. Crews will be installing rock lining and erosion control in various locations. North Fork Salt River Bridge nearing completion, crews are working on cleanup operations on bridge.

Traffic During Construction
- Access to the highway through at-grade intersections
- Median openings will be provided at state routes and county roads
- Traffic maintained on the existing Route 36 during construction
- Temporary side road closures will be required occasionally
- MoDOT will make every effort to minimize inconvenience to drivers
Schedule
Cost/Funding
- Project construction is estimated at $100 million.
- Partially funded through a half-cent local sales tax in Macon, Shelby, Monroe and Marion counties - this is estimated to fund $43 million of the project
- $7 million earmark for Route 36 from Congressman Kenny Hulshof
- The other $50 million of the project (for construction) is being funded by MoDOT. All other project costs, including engineering, right of way acquisition, survey, etc., are being funded by MoDOT.
