Glenstone/Sunshine Widening
Focuses on West and South Legs

DISTRICT 8, SPRINGFIELD - Work to rebuild entrances and widen the pavement will occur along the west and south legs of the Sunshine Street and Glenstone Avenue (Business U.S. 65) intersection during the week of June 21, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

A contractor crew will:

* Rebuild entrances to businesses on the south side of Sunshine Street between Glenstone and Kentwood avenues.

* Rebuild entrances along southbound and northbound Glenstone Avenue between Sunshine Street and a point north of Cherokee Street.

Drivers will be able to get to businesses in these areas. However, half of a driveway may be closed to enable crews to do the work.

In other developments:

* The right-turn lanes on the southwest and southeast corners are closed for several weeks. Crews will rebuild the islands and extend the turn lanes. Drivers will have to make right turns at the intersection.

* A contractor working for City Utilities will relocate a water line on the northeast corner. Much of this work will take place AWAY from traffic.

Updates on the project will be provided through the news media and on MoDOT's web site, modot.org (click on Springfield on the map).

The Sunshine/Glenstone widening is one of four such projects along Glenstone and four along Kansas Expressway, all designed to improve traffic flow on heavily traveled state routes through the city.

Sunshine Street carries Route D east of Glenstone Avenue, while Glenstone Avenue in that part of the city carries Business U.S. 65.

The eight intersections are being widened under a partnership between MoDOT and the City of Springfield, with the city's 1/8-cent sales tax for transportation being used to complete the work sooner than otherwise would be possible.

The Sunshine Street/Glenstone Avenue intersection carries 80,000 vehicles a day, the city's busiest non-highway intersection. By comparison, the U.S. 65/Sunshine Street interchange carries 100,000 vehicles a day.
