The possibility of several rainy days through the week has prompted MoDOT to reschedule a "sand seal" project on U.S. 160/Route 13 to start Monday, August 30.
The project, between Highlandville and Nixa, had been set to start Monday, August 23.
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will apply a thin layer of liquid asphalt to the pavement and then will spread manufactured sand on top.
Crews will close a lane at 8:30 a.m., after morning rush hour, and work until about 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The operation will begin near South Street south of Nixa and move toward the south, ending south of Christian County Route EE south of Highlandville.
The 9-mile long sand-seal job is expected to take four to six working days to complete.
The work is needed to preserve the pavement for one more winter and prepare the roadway for an asphalt resurfacing project scheduled for the summer of 2005.
Here's what to expect, starting Monday, August 30:
* A lane of the highway will be closed where the work is being done. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.
* When the excess sand is swept off the roadway, dust will blow into the air. Dusty conditions may continue overnight.
* Reduced speed is advisable when driving on the sandy, dusty roadway. If possible, take an alternate route.
* Pay attention to advisories on electronic message boards and signs that warn "Fresh Oil, Loose Gravel" and "No Centerline Stripe."
* New pavement stripes will be painted on the highway within a few days after the sealing operation is completed.
Rain or wet pavement will temporarily stop the project.
