What Is The Latest Update On The Clayton Road Project?

Crews work on curbs between Baxter Road and Kehr's Mill on Clayton Road.
-
MoDOT is nearly complete with the project and is holding a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of work on the two year project on June 26 at 1 p.m. near the Chesterfield Presbyterian Church. The public is cordially invited to join with MoDOT, its contractor and local officials to celebrate the completion of this needed transportation improvement project.
-
Crews are working on Phase 3 of the project - widening the road between Kehrs Mill Road and Baxter. This will mirror the work done between Clarkson and Kehrs Mill Road, adding a turn lane to the center of Clayton Road. After the ribbon cutting on June 26, crews have about two more weeks of work to complete final paving, striping work and landscaping.
-
Traffic is on new pavement on the north side of the project within the next few weeks. Residents in the area can expect crews to occasionally close side roads onto Clayton for utility and other work on entrances to Clayton Road. The side road closures will be announced through the media and on message boards along Clayton, and detours will be marked.
-
Work on Phase 3, and the project, should be completed in summer 2008.
Contractor information
The contract for the Clayton Road widening and reconstruction project from Clarkson Road to just west of Baxter Road was awarded to Krupp Construction, Inc. (Ellisville, MO) for $13.1 million.

What Is The Problem With Clayton Road?
Clayton Road between Baxter Road and Clarkson Road is currently a two-lane roadway that was built approximately 75 years ago. The pavement is in bad condition and needs to be replaced. In addition, the traffic volumes along Clayton Road have increased substantially the past ten years and future projections show it increasing by about 45 percent in the next 20 years. Consequently, accident rates have been high. Nearly 80 percent of the accidents that occur on Clayton Rd. between Baxter Rd. and Clarkson Rd. are a direct result of vehicles making a left turn into and out of various side streets.
Current Improvement Plans
As part of this project, a continuous third lane will be added on Clayton Road between Baxter Road and Clarkson Road. The intersection at Clayton Road and Kehrs Mill Road will remain signalized. New dedicated right-turn lanes will be added at all four legs of the intersection. The angle between Clayton Road and Kehr’s Mill Road will also be improved to enhance turning movements. Combined shoulder/bicycle lanes and sidewalks will also be added to both sides of the road.
What Is The Project's History?
MoDOT held public meetings in August 2000 and May 2001 to find out what types of improvements residents and motorists felt were necessary for Clayton Road. Residents told MoDOT that the major problem with the road was turning difficulty and that a continuous third lane was needed. MoDOT listened to these comments and has come up with an improvement plan that addresses the safety and congestion problems on Clayton Road. MoDOT also held an informational open house on April 12, 2005 to ask for the public's feedback on various construction staging options for the Clayton Road improvement project.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) held a meeting in spring 2005 to show the public various construction options for Clayton Road. More than 300 people attended the meeting and offered many great suggestions and valuable input.
Of the total 316 comments MoDOT received, 77 percent were in favor of a full or partial closure of Clayton Road. Therefore MoDOT has chosen to pursue Alternative 2, which includes restricting Clayton Road to local traffic in three stages - one from Clarkson to west of Kehrs Mill; one from east of Kehrs Mill to Baxter; and finally one at the Kehrs Mill intersection. The contractor would have to complete one stage before moving to the next stage. This would allow the construction work to be completed in approximately 15-18 months.
"With this alternative, construction will be completed in a much quicker manner and at the same time lessen the impacts to businesses along Clayton Road," says MoDOT Area Engineer Karen Yeomans. Yeomans says MoDOT received many concerns about impacts to local businesses, and choosing this option allows MoDOT to balance those concerns with the impacts to the residents and the business community. Clayton Road will remain open to emergency traffic at all times.
