Route W & MM Study (Major Transportation Investment Analysis)

Purpose & Need

Route MM

  • Safety and Localized Congestion
  • Numerous curves, inadequate shoulders, poor sight distance
  • Crash and fatal crash rates 3 times state average (all 2-lane roads)
  • Projected year 2020 traffic exceeds capacity of planned safety improvements to existing
Route W
  • Safety and Flooding
  • Numerous curves, inadequate shoulders, poor sight distance
  • Crash rate in Jefferson County section 1.7 times state average (all 2-lane roads)
  • Short periods of closure due to flooding of Big River
Recommended Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA)

Route MM
  • New 4-lane road to the south of existing Route MM at Route 30 to just east of Heads
  • Creek Road with a 4 lane Route MM from that point to Route 21
  • New road to have narrow median, and access management controls
  • Safety improvements to the existing Route MM
  • Modification to some hills and curves, addition of turn lanes and access controls
Route W
  • Safety improvements to the existing Route W
  • Modification to some hills and curves, addition of turn lanes and access controls
  • Turn lane locations: Twin River Rd., Winnifred Rd., White Oak School Rd. and Byrnesville Rd.
Cost

  • Total cost estimates for the Route W and Route MM Final Alternatives ranged from $34 million to $115 million (yr 2007 dollars)
  • Route MM est. new alignment cost $74.7 million
  • Route MM est. improvements to existing roadway cost $13.7 million
  • Route W est. improvement cost $14.1

What's Happening?

The results of the study have been approved by the East-West Gateway Council of Governments. The safety improvements to the existing Route MM are currently underway and will be completed in 2010.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is being completed for the Route MM corridor to study a possible new alignment.
