WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?

MoDOT is continuing to upgrade Route 40/61 in St. Charles County to an interstate highway.  Two projects remain to be completed.  Construction is complete on the project between Highway K and Route DD/Winghaven Blvd. Crews are working on turning the former westbound lanes of Route 40 into a two-way outer road. There is still some paving, final grading and guardrail installation to complete. This should be done by early 2008.

The other project, from west of Lake St. Louis Blvd. to I-70, recently started.  Construction should be complete by spring 2009.  Crews have closed Prospect Road access to Route 40 to allow them to stage material and build a bridge for Prospect Road. Most of the utility relocation work is complete for this project. Crews are completing grading and drainage work. Crews should start working on the new eastbound lanes and constructing the bridge at Prospect. The western half of the Prospect Road interchange should be open to traffic in June 2008. This second portion of the project should be complete by fall 2009.

During this work, MoDOT will also complete construction of the outer road system to make sure access to property along Rte. 40 remains available. Access to all local business will remain open.

Once upgrades are complete Rte. 40/61 will be designated as Interstate 64 from the city of St. Louis to I-70 in St. Charles County. 

West of Lake St. Louis Blvd. to I-70  

  • MoDOT awarded a $23 million contract to Millstone Bangert, Inc, in spring 2007. Work has started on this project.
  • Crews have closed access to Route 40 from Prospect Road. Drivers will have to use Callahan Road to access the route until the new interchange at Prospect Road is completed.
  • This two-mile section will include a new interchange at Prospect Road.  View the Prospect Rd. Interchange Map. Currently, Rte. 40 has two traffic signals and a number of entrances to accommodate the current traveling public. In order to meet interstate highway standards, MoDOT will remove the signals and entrances to improve safety, ease congestion and replace pavement. Commuters heavily use the roadway in their daily travels to home, work, or other activities.
  • The traffic signals at Prospect Rd. and Callahan Rd. will be removed as part of the project. All access to the highway will be made through the use of a new interchange at Prospect Rd. Prospect Rd. will be a new diamond interchange consisting of a new bridge over Route 40/61 and entrance and exit ramps for eastbound and westbound traffic on Route 40/61. The ramp terminals at Prospect Rd. will consist of roundabouts instead of traffic signals. New outer roads will be constructed both north and south of the highway to provide access to properties served by an entrance to Route 40/61. Access to all local businesses will remain.
  • This final portion of the upgrading of Rte. 40/61 will include replacing the pavement, building new eastbound lanes, creating free flowing movement for local traffic with entrance and exit ramps. By separating the local and interstate traffic, the highway will be safer and less congested. Overall, the completed project will look like this: Final phase I-64/40 upgrade.
  • Construction has begun, with construction complete by fall 2009.

Other proposed projects that need to be constructed to complete the corridor upgrade (no  right-of-way or construction funding has been approved)

Daniel Boone Bridge Study

  • Rte. 40/61 new bridge over the Missouri River. A Location and Environmental Study has been completed and approved. The study recommends that a new bridge for eastbound traffic be built south of the existing bridges. The existing bridges will be used for westbound traffic. About $3 million dollars has also been identified for further design work.  This additional design is expected to begin by spring 2007.  No funding has been identified for right-of-way acquisition or construction. No construction start date has been set.
  • Estimated cost in 2007 dollars to buy right-of-way, construct a new bridge and roadway, and rehabilitate the existing bridges is about $170 million.
